Last year, Daisy Edgar-Jones marked the BAFTA TV Awards in true #WFH style. Live and direct from home (and wearing slippers), the star, nominated in the Best Actress category, handled a minor technical issue just before her category was announced. Her laptop died. Thankfully, she got it up and running in time to see fellow nominee Michaela Coel win the prize for her rousing performance in I May Destroy You.
No such mishap will threaten her BAFTAs 2022 experience. Hot on the heels of her promo tour for Fresh – a new thriller in which she stars alongside Pam and Tommy’s Sebastian Stan, her plus one for the BAFTAs – Daisy worked with her stylist Nicky Yates to conjure a look that would light up the red carpet. “I’m really appreciating the chance to be with the people who I made [Fresh] with,” Daisy said ahead of the ceremony. “It’s really special.”
The Brit has already served some spellbinding looks while promoting Fresh, courtesy of Nensi Dojaka and Fendi, but Nicky wanted to ensure that Daisy’s BAFTAs appearance was a moment to remember. Together, they worked with Gucci on a sparkling custom look, which Daisy describes as “so beautiful”. After trying several different options, the glittering dress was the one she fell in love with. “I’ve just never seen anything like it,” she told British Vogue ahead of the ceremony. Daisy credits Nicky’s invaluable guidance. “She totally gets what I love,” the actor asserts. “We work so well together, I feel very lucky.”
Daisy’s dress also has personal touches. It reminds her of fairy books that she read while growing up, says the actor, who likens the swishy beading to the ethereal images she admired as a child.
Now that IRL red carpets are back (no more tape measures to maintain a social distance from her Normal People co-star Paul Mescal), Daisy swapped her beloved slippers for a pair of “crazy big” Gucci platforms. Tiffany & Co. supplied extra sparkle for the occasion, but otherwise Daisy was keen to keep her hair and make-up look low-key.
Edgar-Jones has got her pre-appearance routine down pat. She brings a speaker with her everywhere, because good music gets her in the mood, she says. “La Forêt” by Lescop and Ed Marquis’s remix of Rihanna’s club banger “Pon De Replay” were both on the BAFTAs playlist she compiled ahead of getting ready at The Savoy. Dressing in a suite at the hotel – where she once put in a couple of shifts while working as a wine waiter – represents something of a full circle moment for the actor, now one of Britain’s most exciting acting talents.
